The shooting occurred shortly after midnight on Jan. 24, in the 1600 block of West 60th Place. A suspicious vehicle stopped in the street; a gunman emerged, confronted Cotton and shot him several times. Mr. Cotton was hit and collapsed on the side of his residence. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics rushed him to a local hospital where he died. The suspect was last seen driving westbound on 60th Place.
