top leadership of a local chapter of the Latin Kings street gang were arrested on drug, assault and weapons charges

Eight high-ranking gang members that make up the top leadership of a local chapter of the Latin Kings street gang were arrested on drug, assault and weapons charges, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy announced Friday. Two others, believed to be gang "associates" were also arrested. The arrests come as a result of an investigation that spanned several months and included aggressive efforts from the FBI Long Island Gang Task Force and the Suffolk County Police Department Special Operations Team.Gang violence has long plagued several communities on Long Island prompting the FBI to recently boost its anti-gang personnel and add more agents to gang crackdown investigations.Among those arrested include Angel Cordero Jr. who authorities describe as the leader of the Huntington-area chapter. According to court papers, Cordero, at one point, was the leader of the Latin Kings on all of Long Island. The federal warrant supporting the arrests lists three gang-related shootings brought on by an apparent war with two other local gangs: the Southside Posse and the Crips. None of the shootings were fatal, officials said. The 10 suspects are charged with an array of crimes including conspiracy, assault with a dangerous weapon as racketeering act, distribution of cocaine, solicitation of assault with a dangerous weapon, gun trafficking, possession of gun with serial number removed, and being a felon in possession of a weapon."This well coordinated, successful law enforcement effort in Huntington Station sends a strong signal to gang members that their actions will not be tolerated in our county," said Levy. "We applaud the FBI for working closely for several months with the Suffolk Police Department and other agencies; this is an important step and part of a continuing effort in Huntington Station and other communities to ensure the safety and well being of our families and children."
