suspects represent the Latin Kings, Belizean Bloods and Sureño 13s street gangs; 12 suspects came from Mexico and two from Belize, authorities said

Fourteen Chicago-area street gang members and associates were arrested as part of a nationwide sweep targeting gangs affiliated with drug trafficking organizations, authorities said today.

The crackdown, part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's ongoing "Project Southern Tempest," netted 678 total arrests of gang members and associates from 133 different gangs between December and February. A similar sweep last September resulted in 20 Chicago-area arrests.

The Chicago-area gang members come from Chicago, Addison, Elgin, Harvey, Joliet, Melrose Park, Park Ridge, St. Charles and Wauconda, ICE officials said in a news release.

The suspects represent the Latin Kings, Belizean Bloods and Sureño 13s street gangs; 12 suspects came from Mexico and two from Belize, authorities said. Federal authorities worked with local police agencies in making the arrests.

The local suspects were all charged with administrative violations and face deportation. Authorities wouldn't release the suspects’ names, saying they don't identify those facing administrative charges.

Transnational street gangs frequently have foreign-born members involved in international crimes such as drug and human smuggling, identity theft and cybercrimes, authorities said.
