Rickey Rice, 24, of Newport News, and 10 co-defendants were named in a 39-count indictment in March for their role in the “Dump Squad,” which grew from a national gang known as the “Bloods.” The gang operated in Newport News. The charges against the 11 co-defendants included murder, attempted murders, robberies, assaults, arson, witness intimidation, narcotics distribution and weapons violations. Rice pleaded guilty in April to his participation, specifically that he knowingly engaged in drug trafficking and crimes of violence, the news release said. He also pleaded guilty to maiming Tony Vaughan, who was beaten by gang members before being shot and killed, in the aid of racketeering activity. Three other defendants were sentenced earlier this month after pleading guilty to their roles in the gang. Ty Davis, 25, was sentenced Sept. 1 to serve 30 years in prison, and on Sept. 2, Twan Bugg, 23, was sentenced to 30 years and Samuel Bates, 27, was sentenced to 25 years. All three are from ...

Crime Line tip this morning led police to a fugitive wanted in a racketeering conspiracy that authorities say was carried out by a local faction of the Bloods gang.The indictments in the case in U.S. District Court were announced by Newport News police on Friday. Ten suspects were arrested, and the 11th was arrested this morning after police got a Crime Line tip about 10:15 a.m., Newport News police said.The tip led officers to Rickey Rice, who was arrested at 11:10 a.m. in the 7300 block of River Road, a police statement said.The racketeering conspiracy includes murders, attempted murders and the torching of a police substation. The gang called itself the “Dump Squad” and other names.

"Dump Squad," the "Bang Gang" or the "Slump Mobb" — is affliated with the national Bloods gang, prosectors said in announcing indictments Friday.
